2015 Creek Cleanup Results

On April 11, the weather was fine, and the trash was plentiful: 171 volunteers worked from boats and on foot to collect 445 bags of trash and recyclables, 35 and a half tires, five and a half shopping carts, and many other items: a rifle, seven unopened bottles of eggnog, a Romney for President sign, a mannequin, a window frame, sweatpants, carpeting, construction materials, two bathtubs, two bikes, full and empty cans of paint, a large bag of dirty diapers, a muffler, a gutter pipe, a picnic table, a rubber duck, and more.

Volunteers hauled out an estimated 4,000 pounds of trash and litter (not including tires) at 16 locations along the creek.

The cleanup was part of the Potomac Watershed Cleanup sponsored annually by the Alice Ferguson Foundation.

TRASHMASTER Award

2015 Cleanup Champions

Every year, the Friends of Little Hunting Creek give out AWARDS, some highly contested and some not-so-coveted, to recognize the achievements of its dedicated volunteers.

TRASHMASTER OF LITTLE HUNTING CREEK

Awarded to TOM FAHY, for Sustained, Superlative, Solo Effort over many years of Little Hunting Creek Cleanups.

In the past five years alone, Tom has singlehandedly hauled out 185 bags of trash and recyclables on the Wagon Wheel Oxbow. (Well, almost singlehandedly, some years he's had help from his lovely wife, Karen.)

TRASH-TALKING LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Awarded to SCOTT SUROVELL, for his heroic efforts to clean up the creek, and introduce legislation to keep shopping carts out of the creek.

The Friends beat the drum for all of the Suro–Vols, who year after year throw themselves into the effort to clean up the trashiest stretch of stream in Fairfax County.

MOST IMPRESSIVE NEIGHBORHOOD EFFORT

Awarded to RIVERSIDE ESTATES RESIDENTS, including Scott Cameron, the Davises, the Joyces, the Reileys, Mort Isler, Tom Fahy, and all 58 volunteers and site leaders who pulled 142 bags of litter and eight and a half tires out of the creek.

(At right, Allen Davis, who has mobilized Riverside Estates' cleanup efforts).

BEST NEW NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP EFFORT

Awarded to GREG CRIDER AND WILLIAMSBURG MANOR RESIDENTS, for successfully launching an "army" and a "navy" of cleaner-uppers into uncharted trash territory on North Branch Little Hunting Creek.

THE NOT-SO-COVETED LITTLE HUNTING CREEK IMMERSION AWARD

Awarded this year to Dakota Hunt.

THE PADDLE HARDER AWARD

Awarded to Tom Earley and Skip Jones, for paddling to the rescue of volunteers working on the marsh at the Brady Street reach.

Congratulations and Thanks to All!

The people mentioned above are just a few of the trash magnates (or is that trash magnets?) involved in the Little Hunting Creek Cleanup. Special thanks go to the efforts of all the volunteers, especially:
